]]> All begonias are very popular due to the mass of flowers they produce all summer long, but the Mocca mix is real favourite due to it’s dark velvet brown to purple leaves as well as its’ variety of strong colours. Easy to grow and happy in most locations, sun or shade, tubs, borders and beds. There’s the added advantage of the tuberous nature of its roots which make it a perennial if you take care to protect it from frost, either dig the tubers up and store in a cool dry place, or the whole pot, otherwise fleece and cover to protect from cold and water logging. Greenhouse Product News recommend nitrate rather than ammonium nitrogen with increased levels of calcium to improve plant quality.

]]> Kniphofia Uvaria, also known as Red Hot Poker, or Toch Lily is a real attention grabbing flower. It has sturdy stalks topped with high viz shaggy coats of tubular flowers surrounded by evergreen grass like leaves.  This clump forming hardy perennial is pretty indestructible once established unless it gets flooded and frozen. Good drainage and a late autumn mulch should prevent that.

A moderate feeder, it doesn’t like bone dry ground. Kniphofia prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade and isn’t too fussy about pH levels. They require little attention, but will get plenty nevertheless, a natural focal point. In it’s native Africa it flowers in winter and is dormant during the hotter months, according to Wikipedia. Here in the UK it has adapted to our less tropical climate and flowers from March to November. The flowers are long-lived, and it’s a great pollinator.
