Campanula Rotundifolia (Harebell, Scottish Bluebell) is native to most temperate zones in the northern hemisphere. This herbaceous perennial wildflower has elegant little blue flowers on top of strong 10″ to 20″ stalks.

Spreads by seed and rhizomes easily competing with long grasses once established, requires little fertilizer and is drought tolerant. It has a long flowering period which varies according to location, in the UK this is usually July to late September, but can go on to November, usually mid violet-blue but occasionally pink or even white.

Attractive to bees, it provides an important source of nectar in the Autumn.

Native to northern Europe where it thrives in floodplain meadows. Easily recognisable with it’s masses of egg shaped crimson red flowers swaying in the wind atop tall stems. This perennial herbaceous wild flower can survive for decades with its’ extensive root system.

With a spicy flavour its’ attractive serrated leaves can be harvested for soups, salads and sandwiches, though not as much as its’ close relative salad burnet which is shorter.

Ideal for marsh and pond bank planting, or damp meadows, companion planting with Black Knapweed, Field Scabious, Meadows Cranesbill and Meadowsweet.

The Wildlife Trust say that the flowers were once used to make wine in Cumbria. Traditionally used for medicinal purposes, healing wounds and stop bleeding, the roots were used for nosebleeds, burns and insect bites.

Salvia Nemorosa Violet Queen, also called Woodland Sage, is recommended by the seed supplier as one of the finest perennial salvias available.

A clump forming plant, it produces masses of violet blue flowers. A well drained sunny spot is preferred, south or west facing in the front or middle of the border for best displays.

This low maintenance flower can be divided after five or more years. Otherwise a light feed in spring and mulch in autumn are all that is required.

With blue grey leaves and stems they also make nice cut flowers, having a unique but delightful aroma. Horticulture UK suggest planting around a kitchen garden where it will attract pollinators and is great for bees.

Perennial Delphiniums are taller than the annual variety, with stately spires of blue, lavender, white and purple that will be the mainstay of any cottage garden or border. Preferring a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds unless staked, or mixed with more sturdy plants. Once established they will flower from early summer. The horticulture magazine recommends regular deadheading, and cutting back to the base once flowered to promote a second flush. A good pollinator, this is another bee-friendly plant.

Easy draining soils are best. Mulch in autumn to improve fertility and protect from frost damage.

The name delphinium comes from Greek meaning dolphin because of the shape of the flowers.

With it’s delicate lilac blue flowers shimmering in the sunlight English Lavender causes a haze that is a delight to the eye. Commonly considered to be a herb, lavender is a hardy herbaceous perennial with a woody stem, which can grow to 2 or 3 feet tall. Lavender is sometimes used for hedging. We recommend shaping in spring, with only light pruning otherwise.

English lavender prefers sandy or chalky soil, with lots of sun, and definitely not clay or any heavy wet soils. The aroma, lighter and sweeter than French lavender, is distinctive and provides dried herbs, which have medicinal as well as culinary uses. But most often grown simply for it’s beauty. Lavender fits well in cottage gardens and herb beds.

Height 60-90cm. Spread 60-120cm. Flowering June and July. Pollinator

Kniphofia Uvaria, also known as Red Hot Poker, or Toch Lily is a real attention grabbing flower. It has sturdy stalks topped with high viz shaggy coats of tubular flowers surrounded by evergreen grass like leaves. This clump forming hardy perennial is pretty indestructible once established unless it gets flooded and frozen. Good drainage and a late autumn mulch should prevent that.

A moderate feeder, it doesn’t like bone dry ground. Kniphofia prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade and isn’t too fussy about pH levels. They require little attention, but will get plenty nevertheless, a natural focal point. In it’s native Africa it flowers in winter and is dormant during the hotter months, according to Wikipedia. Here in the UK it has adapted to our less tropical climate and flowers from March to November. The flowers are long-lived, and it’s a great pollinator.

Echinacea, coneflower, is a tough herbaceous perennial with good draught resistance. It comes in many colours variations but purple and white are the most common.

Late flowering daisy like blooms with petals that contrast well with pronounced rounded to cone-shaped central boss, stood atop strong branching stems.

It is increasingly popular in prairie style planting, and grows well in the middle or back of borders where it adds stability to less sturdy tall flowers.

Prefers rich well drained soil in a sunny location. Mixing well with other tall late flowerers, attractive to pollinators and often used in complementary medicine. Makes good cut flowers, cutting back extending the flowering season.

Eryngium planum, sea holly, is a drought resistant hardy perennial with striking blue thistle like flowers and bracts.

It prefers dry poor or moderately fertile soil, with full sun at least six hours a day. Over fertilisation makes them leggy and wet clay ground causes root rot.

Blooming in summer and sometimes into autumn, with deep tap roots they are useful in rock gardens, tolerant of sea spray in coastal gardens and attractive in borders where their steel blue flowers and foliage compliment vibrantly coloured summer flowers.

Looking good rising above low growing plants, or mingling amongst roses and taller perennials to provide contrast and texture.
Very popular with bees and other pollinators.

The RHS recommends deadheading until late summer then leaving flowers for interest and wildlife.
Once established it will grow to 2’6″ (75cm) high by 1’6″ (45cm) wide.
