Perennial Delphiniums are taller than the annual variety, with stately spires of blue, lavender, white and purple that will be the mainstay of any cottage garden or border. Preferring a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds unless staked, or mixed with more sturdy plants. Once established they will flower from early summer. The horticulture magazine recommends regular deadheading, and cutting back to the base once flowered to promote a second flush. A good pollinator, this is another bee-friendly plant.
Easy draining soils are best. Mulch in autumn to improve fertility and protect from frost damage.
The name delphinium comes from Greek meaning dolphin because of the shape of the flowers.
